Application Essays, Personal Statements and Biographies

Educational institutions require an example of your writing. Essays, personal statements and biographies are required in varying forms, and are important components of the college search. As part of our college counseling program, we will help you clarify your thoughts, organize your ideas, and carefully check spelling and grammar to produce a sparkling, coherent statement to complement your application.

Some colleges may request one essay or a combination of essays and short topics. Whatever they request, the purpose is to both get acquainted with you and to see how well you can communicate. Topics vary, but generally personal experiences and the reasons for wanting to attend a particular college, is covered. Colleges want to see creativity and imagination and may describe a situation and ask for analysis and comment. In every case creativity, originality and the thought processes are the important factors for evaluation.

Completing the college application and preparing an essay helps learn about the school to which you are applying. It also tells the school a lot about you. As with any introduction, it is critical to make a good first impression. That means you must understand what the school needs from you and what the school looks for in a prospective student. Most schools, especially private schools have an educational mission and look for students that help complement that mission. In addition, each student has unique requirements and needs that not every school can fill. It is important to find both the right college and find the right major. Therefore, it is essential to research how the needs of the student and the educational and cultural philosophies of the school match. The right match can result in a fulfilling and positive educational experience. Your written submissions will go a long way in determining if you are a good match for the school, and help you find the right college or the right university as the first step in your career development.

Self-Knowledge

The ultimate goal of our testing program is to help people learn about their skills and aptitudes and areas in which these attributes might be put to use. This knowledge may seem superfluous or unnecessary to the executive recently laid off. But employment experts agree the first step in looking for a new job is to learn more about yourself. Attributes testing can provide an unbiased outside assessment of the inherent abilities you can offer a potential employer.

Returning To School

For those with the time, the money, and the desire to return to school, attributes testing can help sort out the possibilities and give direction. Homemakers in particular, when thinking of going back to school, may be overwhelmed by the number and variety of educational opportunities, many of which were not available when they were teenagers. People considering changing careers may benefit from learning how their aptitudes relate to educational possibilities.
